Rod Ring, DVM: ![]() The majority of modern horses have problems with their teeth caused by irregular growth and wear. Horses are bred for their physical appearance and performance. Breeders tend to ignore breeding for a sane mouth. Particularly horses with small, delicate heads tend to have problems with their teeth. In the wild, a horse with a poor mouth simply died, resulting in the natural selection of horses that can chew properly. The domesticated horse depends on man’s responsibility. The owner should provide him with regular dental care in the interest of maintaining good health. The equine jaw is structurally predisposed to irregular wear. This may interfere with training and performance, and, even worse, cause a variety of medical problems. The object of routine dental management is to maintain normal dental occlusion (bite). Many of the problems of irregular wear may be prevented. Equine Dentistry ensures proper chewing and comfortable acceptance of the bit. |
